Dental Implants
There are a number of options for replacing missing teeth. Dental implants are the current gold standard for replacing missing teeth. There are two parts to dental implant placement:
Surgical implant placement – Following a thorough assessment of the hard and soft tissue including the amount of available bone, an appropriate implant is chosen and placed into the bone. There is usually a recovery period of up to 3 months to allow the implant to properly integrate with the bone. This is tested at the end of the healing period to ensure proper integration.
Restoration of implant – Once the implant is well integrated with the bone, the restorative phase can commence. In this phase, the healing cap is removed and an impression of the implant and surrounding soft tissues is obtained. The implant crown is then fabricated at a dental lab and this is fitted onto the implant.
It is important that a regular hygiene and maintenance schedule be kept to ensure the longevity of the dental implant.
